KBCHS Library

KBCHS Library is a friendly, caring and inclusive space that aims to create an engaging learning space for all students, where your child feels connected and cared for and to encourage a love of reading for recreation and enjoyment.  Library staff are always available to guide, direct, instruct and inspire students in their pursuits to become independent lifelong learners.

The Library has on offer a generous collection of both a variety of genres for educational reading and educational text, 45 networked computers, wireless laptops, iPads and board-games. We also have a careers section where students can find information on their desired career, what path to take, job guides, TAFE & university course guides, apprenticeship information and various resources for resume writing and interview techniques.

Our spacious, well equipped Library is host to many classes booked in throughout the day, where students can flourish in an innovated and welcoming learning environment. The Library is open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 3:30pm, including Lunch 1 and Lunch 2. Whether students wish to play a game, research, study or read and relax, the KBCHS Library provides an atmosphere conducive to both learning and leisure.

The Homework Club is offered in the Library after school on Wednesday’s, weeks 2 to 9 from 3pm to 4pm.  All students from years 7 to 10 are welcome to use this opportunity to receive assistance to complete assignments and learning tasks, improve their literacy and numeracy skills, revise work or get help with a particular subject. Homework Club is a rewarding initiative that sees students gather after school to work collaboratively on their studies in a comfortable yet productive place. Students that frequently attend Homework Club become independent pupils who take responsibility for their learning.

What does Fiction mean?

Fiction means it isn’t real, it is made up.

How can I find items in the Library?

You can use the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) computer. This is an online database of material held by our library. Users can search by author, title, keyword, subject, series, contents, notes or by the barcode.

How much does it cost?

Membership is free but you will be charged for any lost or damaged resources whilst they are on loan to you.

How do I get a Library Card?

Library cards are issued to all new students after the return of a completed Library form. You can get a form from the library. Your Library card can also be used as an ID card as it will have your name, your photo and your date of birth on it. You should never lend your card or give your books to another student as you are responsible for all items checked out on your card.

What if I lose or damage my Library Card?

If you lose your card, you must inform Library staff. Your first card is free but if you need another one it will cost you $4.00.

Why do I need to show my card to borrow?

Having to show your card is a measure of security, as each person is responsible for the items borrowed on their card. It prevents other people from giving you name when taking items out.

How many items can I borrow?

You can borrow up to 4 items at a time, including; Fiction, Non-Fiction, Careers Graphic Novels, picture Books, Manga Novels and Quick Reads.

What can’t I borrow?

You cannot borrow Reference books, Periodicals, Games or items on Closed Reserve. You are more than welcome to utilise these resources’ in the Library. Under special circumstances you may borrow Closed Reserved items.

How long can I borrow items?

Items can be borrowed for 2 weeks

Can I borrow a book that is on display?

Yes, books and other resources are displayed to encourage readers to loan them out

Where do I return my book?

Just as you walk in the door of the library to the left is a return chute, place all returned items in the chute. Please don’t return books to the shelves or leave them at the circulation desk.

What happens if my book isn’t returned by the due date?

As soon as your book becomes overdue, you will be issued with a reminder notice in your Form Class. A letter home to your parent or guardian advising them of the overdue resources is also sent. If you have an overdue book you cannot borrow any resources from the Library.

What if we lost or damaged a book?

If you lose or damage a book you will be charged for the replacement cost of the item. Please check your home again very carefully. If you are still sure that you have lost the book, please inform the library staff and you will be sent an account for the cost to replace the item.

I received an overdue notice from the library but I have already returned this item.

Please tell the library staff know that you have already returned the item and they will investigate the issue.

What are the rules of the Library?

  • Enter the Library in a quiet, orderly manner and remove your hat.
  • No eating or drinking in the Library
  • Maintain a quiet and constructive environment when using the library
  • Be aware of respect, courtesy, rights and responsibilities for yourself and others at all times.
  • If you are not borrowing, please return items to the correct areas or if you do not know where they go please place them on the trolleys.
